Rising high school juniors and seniors with an interest in sports and media are encouraged to apply for the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp. The four-day workshop will instruct students on sports play-by-play, sports writing, sports photography and more through classroom study and newsroom practice. Students will take a behind-the-scenes tour of UNC’s sports media facilities and cover a press conference. They will also observe an undergraduate sports writing class taught by Sports Camp lead instructor Tim Crothers, author of Queen of Katwe whose work has appeared in New York Times Magazine and ESPN Magazine.
The 2018 program will run from June 27-30.

The North Carolina Scholastic Media Association celebrated 75 years of service to high school media in 2016.
The association’s roots extend back to 1936 when UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus newspaper began sponsoring the North Carolina Scholastic Press Institute. One of the leaders of that student-run operation was David Stick. In his archived papers at the Outer Banks History Museum, Stick describes organizing the annual workshops, as well as his summer jobs at North Carolina newspapers.
North Carolina’s high school press association was officially established in 1941 when it became a part of UNC’s journalism program. Professor Walter Spearman served as the first director, and he continued in that role for three decades.
Today, NCSMA continues to celebrate and to champion scholastic journalism through regional workshops, statewide media contests, the N.C. Scholastic Media Institute, the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp, the Graduate Journalism Education Fellowship and more.
