Newsroom 21: New Hiring Practices and the Challenge of Building a 21st-Century Newsroom

Changes in digital technologies and shifts in the ways that news is produced and consumed have led to a transformation in the skills required to work in the modern newsrooms at major media organizations. Technological disruption continues to impact the industry as organizations grapple with the transition to a digital environment; this trend has been particularly apparent in the shift toward mobile and social news channels. One way by which news organizations are adapting accordingly is through shifts in the required skills and prescribed roles of newsworkers, specifically through the integration of data, analytic and platform related job roles into the modern professional newsroom. Workers in these new roles bring new skills into the modern newsroom, and help to drive industry wide change.

Building from an institutional theory framework, this case study uses data from online databases to trace the employment histories of newsworkers at New York City-based news media organizations. It provides an analysis of the transformation for the future of the news media industry. Current changes ongoing within the industry point to the institutionalization of new practices and the emergence of a new professional newsroom workforce. Further, this presentation provides insight into the shifts in hiring practices at major newsrooms in New York City.
