"Assessing the State of Local Journalism and Identifying Indicators of Vulnerability"
Local journalism is widely recognized as being in a state of crisis; however, relatively little research has explored the conditions and characteristics of individual communities and how these might relate to the state of local journalism. This presentation will describe the latest findings from the News Measures Research Project, an ongoing research initiative focused on developing measures for assessing the state of local journalism at various levels of analysis. Specifically, this project is developing and testing measures of the health of local journalism at the macro (state); meso (designated market area), and micro (individual community) levels. This presentation will describe the latest findings from the state and designated market area analyses, which provide insights into the types of states and media markets in which local journalism is at its most – and least – robust. This presentation will also describe ongoing data gathering for a large-scale analysis of the state of local journalism in 100 communities across the U.S.
The Mary Junck Research Colloquium series was formally established in 2007 to nurture an intellectually vibrant climate with both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary shades, by scheduling scholarly presentations on diverse topics.
The speakers represent various disciplines and units on campus as well as other universities and organizations in the Triangle. The series has been particularly successful in attracting scholars and researchers of national and international renown from within the U.S. and abroad. The series attracts a diverse audience comprising faculty, graduate students and researchers from around the Triangle.
