Panelists

Associate Professor Paul Cuadros

Paul CuadrosAssociate Professor Paul Cuadros is an award-winning investigative reporter and author whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Time magazine, Salon.com, The Chicago Reporter and other national and local publications. For the past 20 years, Cuadros has focused his reporting on issues of race and poverty in America. In 1999, he won a fellowship with the Alicia Patterson Foundation to report on emerging Latino communities in rural poultry-processing towns in the South. He has won the National Association of Hispanic Journalist’s award for online reporting, and he won the UNC Diversity Award in 2012.

 

 

 

WUNC Race and Southern Culture Reporter Leoneda Inge

Leoneda IngeLeoneda Inge is WUNC's race and southern culture reporter. She is the first public radio journalist in the South to hold such a position, which explores modern and historical constructs to tell stories of poverty and wealth, health and food culture, education and racial identity. Her most recent work of note includes the series “When a Rural North Carolina Clinic Closes,” “50 Years of the Ebony Fashion Fair,” the debate surrounding “Race, Slavery & Monuments,” and the “Rebuilding of Princeville” after Hurricane Matthew. In 2017, Inge was named Journalist of Distinction by the National Association of Black Journalists.

 

 

 

Senior Maryam Mohamed '19

Maryam Mohamed '19Maryam Mohamed is a UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media senior studying broadcast journalism, with hopes to pursue a career in media. Mohamed’s identity as an Arab-American influenced her decision to enter journalism because she would like to be the voice for millions across the world who are underrepresented or marginalized in the American media. She eventually would like to have her own talk show as an Arab spin-off of Oprah Winfrey. She currently is the anchor and executive producer of Carolina Now, and a reporter for Carolina Week, a student-run broadcast at UNC.

Barry SaundersBarry Saunders, publisher of the saundersreport.com, is a former columnist with The News & Observer. His influential columns ran in The N&O for 24 years before he left the newspaper in 2017. Saunders has also written for the Post-Tribune in Gary, Indiana, the Richmond County Daily Journal, the Robeson Record, the Washington North Star and the Atlanta Constitution. He also published his own newspaper, the Richmond County North Star. He has won many North Carolina Press Association awards, and his columns have been compiled in the books “Do Unto Others ... and Then Run” and “And the Horse You Rode In On, Saunders.”
