The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media will host The Wall Street Journal’s Kimberley Strassel for a public lecture and discussion at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, in Gerrard Hall. Strassel is a member of the Journal’s editorial board and writes its weekly Potomac Watch column.

Hussman School Professor of the Practice Ferrel Guillory and opinion writing instructor Angelia Herrin will join Hussman School students Dana Anthony ’20 (M.A.), Chris Gentilviso ’19 (M.A.) and Sydney Persing ’19 on stage for discussion and Q&A following Strassel’s remarks.

Her talk, titled “A View from Washington,” will delve into the day’s headlines, current issues in the nation’s capital and the importance of civil liberties to healthy democracies — specifically those guaranteed by the First Amendment. She blends original reporting and historical context to spur conversation about current events and the impact of political and social actions on civil liberties.

Strassel — who stresses the importance of civil engagement spirited debate — has established herself as a leading political commentator through her writings and appearances on the Sunday political shows including CBS's "Face the Nation," Fox News Sunday and NBC's "Meet the Press." She has authored three books including “Leaving Women Behind,” “The Intimidation Game” and “Is American Democracy in Crisis?”

“In a time when people are questioning intellectual freedom on campuses in America, we are a school that wants to emphasize how important it is to hear different points of view,” said Susan King, dean of the school. “The Wall Street Journal editorial page is a respected institution with a strong point of view. We want our students to engage with the leading voices in media and journalism and to understand the debate around ideas.”

Hussman School Professor of the Practice Ferrel GuilloryHussman School Professor of the Practice Ferrel Guillory spent more than 20 years as a reporter, editorial page editor and columnist for The News & Observer in Raleigh before joining the school’s faculty  and founding the Program on Public Life to build bridges between the academic resources at UNC and the governmental, journalism and civic leaders of North Carolina and the South.

 

 

Angelia HerrinAngelia Herrin, who teaches opinion writing, has served as USA Today’s Washington editor, heading national political coverage and as editorial director of Women's Political Hotline. She is currently editor for special projects and research at Harvard Business Review.

 

 

 

Dana Anthony ’20 (M.A.)Dana Anthony ’20 (M.A.) is a first-year graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in strategic communication. She is a summa cum laude graduate of N.C. Central University who worked for IQVIA (formerly Quintiles) for 10 years prior to enrolling in graduate school. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Chamber of Commerce.

 

 

 

Chris Gentilviso ’19 (M.A.)Chris Gentilviso ’19 (M.A.) is a Roy H. Park Fellow who focuses on politics and policy issues across North Carolina. Before coming to Chapel Hill, Gentilviso was in Washington, D.C., working as a politics editor for HuffPost and a writer for Working America. He has served as a producer for TIME.com in New York and a newsletter producer for WRAL’s opinion page in Raleigh.

 

 

Sydney Persing ’19Sydney Persing ’19 is a senior double majoring in broadcast journalism and political science. She is a reporter for the school’s Carolina Week and Carolina Now programs, and formerly for Sports Xtra and Carolina Political Review. She interned at Fox News Channel in New York City for the past three summers, most recently working under Dana Perino, the former White House Press Secretary for President George W. Bush.
