Feb. 15, 2018

On Thursday evening, Feb. 15, all Charlotte-area alumni are invited to join the Media and Journalism Alumni Association for a reception and conversation with Dean Susan King at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The event will be held in conjunction with the Charlotte student networking trip.

Join Dean Susan King and alumnae hostesses Whitney Willingham Cohen '90 and Katherine Snow Smith '90 in St. Petersburg, Florida, for an evening of conversation with local alumni and friends on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

UNC School of Media and Journalism graduate program alumni, students and faculty are invited to attend a breakfast in conjunction with the 2018 AEJMC Conference in Washington, D.C. The event will include an update on the graduate program as we celebrate our school's legacy of scholarship, mentorship and community. Please join us to connect, catch up and meet our current graduate students.

Sept. 24, 2018

Feb. 2, 2017

On Thursday evening, Feb. 2, all Charlotte-area alumni are invited to join the MJ-school for an alumni reception featuring Dean Susan King and the MJ-school's networking trip students. The reception will be held at BooneOakley from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Feb. 6, 2017

Join the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and the UNC School of Media and Journalism for a night of food, drinks, networking and reconnecting with fellow Tar Heel alumni in Nashville. The event will be held Monday, Feb. 6, from 7-9 p.m. at Tennessee Brew Works, owned and operated by Carolina alumnus Christian Spears '95. Drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

March 13, 2017

On Monday evening, March 13, all San Francisco-area alumni are invited to join the MJ-school for an alumni reception featuring the MJ-school's networking trip students. The reception will be held at The Parlor at Hotel Rex from 6-8 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar in The Parlor will be provided. Senior Associate Dean for Strategy and Administration Louise Spieler, Director of Career Services Jay Eubank and Director of Alumni Affairs and Donor Relations Robin Jackson will be the MJ-school administrators in attendance.

On Tuesday evening, May 23, all Charlotte-area alumni are invited to join the Media and Journalism Alumni Association for a casual meet-and-greet at The Broken Spoke from 6-7:30 p.m. Connect with other local alumni and learn more about the ways in which you can support the MJ-school’s students in 2017 and beyond.

May 30-June 2, 2017

Dean Susan King and Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Charlie Tuggle joined five students in San Francisco for the annual Hearst Journalism Awards to compete for individual championship placement. Winners were announced on Thursday, June 1, by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program, during the final awards ceremony in Alexandra’s Ballroom of The Westin St. Francis Hotel.

Claire Collins, a May 2017 graduate from Burlington, won the multimedia competition. Jessica O’Connor, a May 2017 graduate from Concord, won the radio competition. O’Connor also won the top radio story of the year award. Mac Snyder, a Fall 2016 graduate from Charlotte, placed third nationally in the photo competition. Casey Toth, a May 2017 graduate from Cary, placed fifth in multimedia, and John Thomas, a May 2017 graduate from Elizabethtown, placed fifth in radio.

In addition to the individual championships, the MJ-school brought its overall collegiate national championship total to seven — five since 2010 — for the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, more than any other university.

MJ-school alumni and student interns from in and around Washington, D.C., are invited for a gathering at the home of John Schmidt '89 and Kathryn Seale Schmidt '89 on Wednesday, June 7, from 6-8 p.m. Appetizers will be served and Dean Susan King will provide an update on all things Carolina.

Join the DTH and the MJ-school in Charlotte for a joint #DTH125 Charlotte networking event on Wednesday, July 19 — a day for students and alumni from in and around the Queen City to come together. The reception will be held at The Charlotte Observer.

The 2017 Stembler Lecture will be held Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History and will feature Alex Rizk Keane — producer writer, editor and the founder of an independent production company, Rizk Pictures — and Ryan Eggold — writer, director and producer of the 2017 film, Literally, Right Before Aaron.

2016 events

Feb. 3, 2016

The school continued rebranding celebrations in 2016 across the country, beginning with Start Here / Never Stop Raleigh. The Raleigh event was hosted by Joyce Fitzpatrick and Ken Eudy at Capstrat on Feb. 3, 2016. About 75 alumni turned out in a real rain storm to see the innovative and fantastic modern workspace at Capstrat and hear four alumni panelists talk about their careers. Their insights into industry opportunities kept the conversation going even after the panel was history.

June 27, 2016

The MJ-school hosted its first ever MJ Day in Washington, D.C., on Monday, June 27, 2016. MJ Day — Washington, D.C., allowed students and alumni in and around D.C. to come together for both a lunchtime Sharoky Fellows reunion and an alumni and student reception. The Sharoky family joined representatives from the MJ-school, as well as current and former Sharoky Fellows, for lunch and time to explore the Newseum. An alumni reception followed in the evening at Hill Country Barbecue for current MJ-school students interning in the D.C. area for the summer, as well as alumni living or working in and around D.C.

Oct. 20, 2016

The MJ-school kicks off its first regional networking event for the 2016-17 academic year with a visit to New York City during the MJ-school's fall break. On Thursday evening, Oct. 20, all New York City alumni are invited to join the MJ-school for an NYC alumni reception featuring Dean Susan King and the MJ-school's fall break networking trip students — all the way from Chapel Hill! The reception will be held at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs from 6-8 p.m. This gathering provides a casual atmosphere where students can continue the networking experience with alumni and friends of the school.

Nov. 4, 2016

The Media and Journalism Alumni Association will be hosting an alumni Homecoming reception at the UNC School of Media and Journalism on Friday, Nov. 4. The reception will be held in the Freedom Forum Conference Center at 6:30 p.m. and will feature the work of Professor of the Practice Dana McMahan's Workroom FashionMash course. Both alumni and students are welcome to attend the Workroom FashionMash panel session at noon in the Halls of Fame room. RSVPs are not required for the morning panel session. Featured guests for both the morning panel session and evening reception include Alison Ives, Associate Fashion Editor at Refinery29; Mariah Eckhardt, Director of Global Marketing at Burt’s Bees; and Leigh Goodwyn, President and Co-Founder at LeighDeux.

The MJ-school continues its regional networking event series for the 2016-17 academic year with a visit to Washington, D.C. On Thursday evening, Nov. 17, all D.C. alumni are invited to join the MJ-school for an alumni reception featuring Dean Susan King and the MJ-school's networking trip students — all the way from Chapel Hill! The reception will be held at RFD Washington (Regional Food & Drink) from 6-8 p.m. Hors 'doeuvres and a cash bar will be provided.

2015 events



Aug. 28, 2015

Carroll Hall was awash in Carolina Blue as the school celebrated its new name on Aug. 28, 2015, with the Start Here / Never Stop Seminar. The name follows the school's evolution into a modern media school. The celebration included a panel discussion with four illustrious alumni moderated by Dean Susan King. The night ended with the lighting of the school and a reception on the Carroll Hall lawn, complete with music from a local DJ.

Oct. 14, 2015

Following the seminar, the MJ-school kicked off its regional alumni networking event series with Start Here / Never Stop New York City. Alumna Lisa Church opened the doors of her Times Square firm, eMarketer, on Oct. 14, 2015, to more than 75 alumni and guests. King moderated the panel of five alumni, and attendees later had the opportunity to network with 15 alumni experts in media and journalism. Alumna Merrill Rose chaired the event with a host committee of 18 alumni.
