Jonathan Ong is an associate professor of global digital media at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research has a strong interdisciplinary orientation, drawing on media studies, the sociology of humanitarianism, moral philosophy, and the anthropology of moralities. Ong’s work includes analysis of poverty and disaster in news and reality television, inequalities among global and local aid workers in humanitarian technology projects, LGBTQ digital dating in the aftermath of disaster, the work arrangements and moral justifications of paid trolls, the human costs of hate speech and conspiracy theory in the lives of human rights workers, and digital media and COVID-19 racism.
