Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative meeting
October 16, 2018 (All day) to October 18, 2018 (All day)
Carroll Hall

Ten media organizations have been selected to learn how to engage audiences and create sustainable revenue streams as part of the year-long UNC Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative starting in April 2018 and ending in April 2019.

The Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative, which has grown from the Table Stakes program for major metro newspapers, has created partnerships among the UNC Center for Innovation & Sustainability in Local Media, the American Press Institute and the Poynter Institute to add to the depth and impact of the effort. The program, supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, has brought together 39 newsrooms from Houston to the Bay Area to Philadelphia to Alaska.

The participating organizations exist on a variety of platforms — radio, broadcast, newspaper, and digital — with teams of varying sizes, but they all face similar challenges in this disruptive digital age. They come from North Carolina, Virginia, Arkansas, South Carolina and Georgia.

Fall 2018 networking trip to New York City
October 17, 2018 (All day) to October 19, 2018 (All day)
New York City

During networking trips, students make connections and seek advice on landing internship and job opportunities. Students visit workplaces, where they meet in small groups with alumni and others working in media and journalism fields. These visits aren't job or internship interviews but informal meetings with alumni eager to share career tips. Media and journalism outlets previously visited include The New York Times, CNN, Fox News, Edelman, Google, Facebook, PopSugar, Goop, and Cohn & Wolfe. Locations vary each trip. Students selected for the trip typically have already completed courses in the Hussman School and have internship or related experience.

The trips are open to undergraduate majors and master's students admitted to the Hussman School. Students may participate in one trip per year.

The Fall 2018 Hussman School networking trip schedule is:

  • Washington, D.C., on Oct. 4-5 (students should arrive by 5 p.m. on Oct. 4; employer visits will be on Oct. 5)
  • New York City on Oct. 17-19 (students should arrive by 5 pm Oct. 17; employer visits will be Oct. 18 and 19)
  • Atlanta on Nov. 8-9 (students should arrive by 5 pm Nov. 8; employer visits will be Nov. 9)

The Hussman School pays for the hotel stay for students on networking trips. Students are responsible for transportation to and from the trip location and incidental expenses such as food. Travel assistance is available for students with financial need.
