Dan Barkin's career as a journalist began in 1975 as a reporter in southwest Virginia for a small daily newspaper. Later, he worked for The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia, as a reporter and editor. He also worked as an editor at The Baltimore Sun in Maryland and served as publisher for a small paper in Maryland.
He joined The News & Observer in 1996 as business editor and worked at the Raleigh, North Carolina, newspaper until retiring in 2018.
Since then, he has been a contributing writer for Business North Carolina magazine, and edited projects for McClatchy and the Houston Chronicle. He taught at the University of Maryland as a graduate student, and more recently, at Saint Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
