Debbie Crane Communications director, The Nature Conservancy-North Carolina Chapter
After starting out in broadcast media, Debbie Crane later directed public affairs for the N.C. Department of Environment Health and Natural Resources. She now leads communications for The Nature Conservancy’s efforts to preserve the state’s natural spaces.

Elena Rue Filmmaker Co-founder, StoryMineMedia
Elena Rue and a classmate founded StoryMineMedia after completing the UNC Hussman School’s master’s program. They have explored energy, pollution, agriculture and other environmental topics through documentary storytelling for nonprofit and corporate clients.

An award-winning environmental journalist, Kate Sheppard is in her first year on the Hussman School faculty. Before HuffPost, she reported for Mother Jones, Grist and the American Prospect. Her work has been featured in “The Best American Science and Nature Writing.”

Environment and Science Communication at Carolina
This event is sponsored by the Environment and Science Communication program for students at UNC-Chapel Hill. Students in this program earn a bachelor's degree in environmental studies or environmental science and a master's degree in media and communication in as little as five years.
ESC students have completed internships at organizations including Sungevity, Popular Science, the Orange County Solid Waste Management Department and the UNC Institute for the Environment. They have studied at environmental field sites and worked on Hussman School reporting trips across North Carolina and internationally.
