#HashtagActivism: Networks of Race & Gender Justice

Twitter has been both celebrated and critiqued for its role in contemporary politics, yet much of this debate fails to treat the platform as an extension of historical technologies – from the printing press to pirate radio – that were taken up in unexpected and resistant ways by those excluded from public politics. Through discussion of several case studies from her forthcoming book, #HashtagActivism: Networks of Race and Gender Justice, Jackson takes up the possibilities and limitations of today’s digitally-influenced public sphere. She will discuss how citizens concerned with racial and gender justice have adapted their advocacy, media-making, and activism in the digital era; along the way influencing the uses and infrastructures of technology, the logics of journalism, and national politics.

Sarah J. Jackson is an associate professor of communication studies at Northeastern University. Her work examines the cultural power of black celebrity, the political work of black and feminist counterpublics, and media activism. She is a faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, a founding member of the Center for Critical Race & Digital Studies, and a 2019 New America National Fellow.
