Nat Geo features a clip of assistant professor Chad A. Stevens’ documentary about the fight to end mountaintop removal in West Virginia in its April 2014 iPad magazine.

Student groups at the University of North Carolina, University of Virginia and University of Maryland will hold a hackathon in Chapel Hill for more than 200 college and high school women at UNC’s computer science and journalism schools March 22-23.

Landon Dowdy, a senior broadcast and electronic journalism student, won first place in the second and final 2013-14 Hearst Journalism Awards television broadcast news competition.

Joel Brinkley – a 1975 UNC journalism school graduate who worked 23 years with The New York Times as a reporter, editor and bureau chief – passed away March 11. A teaching award in the school honors his father, David Brinkley, also a UNC alumnus.

“Heart of the High Country,” a UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication student project that tells the stories of people in the N.C. mountains, won the 2014 South by Southwest Interactive award in the student category.

Tessa McSwain is the 2014 recipient of the Joy R. Gibson MATC Cohort Award.
The award is voted on by MATC students in their second year and honors the cohort’s “MVP” – the classmate who most exhibits the qualities that help make a cohort successful, such as peer support, collaboration and leadership. It also comes with a stipend and recognition on an engraved plaque in Carroll Hall, home of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Caitlin McCabe, a senior business journalism major from Winston-Salem, N.C., is the 2013 student business journalism winner in the annual Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) Best in Business contest.
Her win marks the eighth time in the past 10 years that a UNC business journalism student has won the student award. This year, there were 39 student entries.

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media seniors Carolyn Van Houten and Karla Towle placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the news category of the Hearst Journalism Awards multimedia competition. 

Jon Kasbe, a 2013 graduate, was named student video photographer of the year and senior Carolyn Van Houten won an award of excellence in the still photography category of the 2014 White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) “Eyes of History” student contest.
Kasbe’s video photography win marks the first time WHNPA has given an award in the category.

Nominate native North Carolinians — or people distinctively identified with the state — who have made outstanding and career-long contributions to journalism, advertising or public relations for the 2014 class of inductees to the N.C. Halls of Fame.
