Four J-school students spent their summers working for some of the nation’s most prestigious media law organizations — the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and National Public Radio’s legal department.

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media offered its first online course in Spring 2003 with the launch of the Certificate in Technology and Communication. Building on the success and proven track record of the Certificate program, the School developed the fully online Master of Arts in Technology and Communicationin Fall 2011.

More than 70 faculty members, emeriti, graduate students, staff members and alumni will represent the UNC J-school at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication national convention in Washington, D.C., Aug 8-11. 

Annie Daniel, a senior from Matthews, N.C., was one of 20 students chosen as a member of the student newsroom for the Online News Association conference Oct. 17-20 in Atlanta.

Monica Hill will receive the AEJMC Scholastic Journalism Division’s David Adams Journalism Educator of the Year Award at the AEJMC convention in Washington, D.C., Aug. 8-11.

In July, the school hosted its seventh Chuck Stone Program for rising high school seniors. During the weeklong workshop, participants produced The Mix — an online publication accompanied by a video.

Powering a Nation’s 2012 special report, “100 Gallons,” was nominated in the New Approaches: Documentaries category of the 34th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.

Jane Brown, longtime professor at the UNC J-school, will receive the 2013 Distinguished Educator Award from the Mass Communication and Society Division of AEJMC.

Sherine El-Toukhy, a 2012 doctoral alumna of the school, won the 2013 Doctoral Dissertation Award given by the health communication divisions of the ICA and the NCA.

Endeavors, UNC's online magazine that features research on campus, takes a quick look at "Carolina Connection" — the Hussman School's radio newsmagazine produced by undergraduate students.
