The Associated Press has named Feilding Cage – a 2006 Carolina J-school graduate – one of nine members of its worldwide staff to win a 2010 Oliver S. Gramling Award for excellence.
The awards, established in 1994, are given annually to staff members whose work and initiative contribute significantly to the news report and to overall AP operations.

Two school students were selected to work as news copy editors this summer at The New York Times as part of the Dow Jones News Fund.
Rising seniors Pressley Baird from Mebane, N.C., and Reyna Desai from Dubai, will train at Temple University in Philadelphia before joining the NYT for a minimum of 10 weeks. They will receive $1,000 scholarships.

The school placed second nationally in broadcast news and third in photojournalism in this year’s Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, known as the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism. Only one other school placed in two of the three overall Hearst competitions.

John W. Adkisson, a senior photojournalism student from Charlotte, placed first in the Multimedia Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, known as the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism.
Adkisson’s “Holding On” was selected from 75 entries submitted by 42 schools nationwide. With the win, he will receive a $2,000 scholarship and an invitation to the national championships in New York City in June.

Carolina Community Media Project director Jock Lauterer and the Northeast Central Durham Community VOICE project won second place in the AEJMC Scholastic Journalism Division’s 2010 Innovative Outreach to Scholastic Journalism competition.

PR students honored with the Award of Excellence by the North Carolina Public Relations Society of America.

Public relations students in the school were given the Award of Excellence in the North Carolina Public Relations Society of America InSpire Awards student competition.
The award recognized students’ "The Blue Print U.S. Census Awareness Campaign" to encourage participation in the 2010 Census.
The four students honored were Megan Sappenfield, Emily Farrar, Christina Kaemmerlen and Amy Dobrzynski. Their faculty advisers were Napoleon Byars, Queenie Byars and Scott Misner.

Carolina leads the nation with four Society of Professional Journalists 2009 Mark of Excellence national winners.
