Winners named in Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition judged by UNC journalism faculty

The Society of American Travel Writers Foundation (SATWF) announced Nov. 10 the winners of the 2011 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition judged by faculty at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Conde Nast Traveler graphics director to speak Nov. 10

The UNC chapter of the Society for News Design will host John Grimwade, graphics director for Conde Nast Traveler, for a talk about infographics Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Carroll Hall room 33. The talk is free and open to the public.

J-school students participate in Mountain Workshops

Six students from the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media participated in the 2011 Mountain Workshops — three concurrent workshops hosted by Western Kentucky University that fine-tuned photography, picture-editing and multimedia skills of college students and mid-career professionals — held Oct. 18-22. This year’s workshops documented Somerset, Ky., and its surrounding countryside.
Assistant professor Chad A. Stevens served as a coach during the workshops.

The UNC-Chapel Hill student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association welcomes New York Times photojournalist Damon Winter to the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 7:30 - 9 p.m in Carroll Hall 111. The event is part of the school's monthly PhotoNight series.

ACES picks Carolina for 2013 conference

The American Copy Editors Society has picked Chapel Hill as the site of its 2013 national conference.
The annual gathering will take place March 14-16, with most sessions at Carroll Hall. Several hundred copy editors are expected to attend the conference, representing news media as well as academia, the public and private sectors, and freelance editors.

Agenda-setting pioneers Don Shaw and Max McCombs honored with 2011 Helen Dinerman Award

The World Association for Public Opinion Research has awarded its 2011 Helen Dinerman Award for scholarship to Donald Shaw, Kenan professor emeritus of the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, and to Maxwell McCombs, a retired journalism professor at the University of Texas.

Journalism workshop for minority high school students scheduled for Feb. 25, 2012

The Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) and the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media will host a one-day journalism workshop for minority high school students on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 in Carroll Hall on the UNC campus. CABJ is a student collegiate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and a student organization of the school.
