Rising senior awarded 4A's Carolinas Council scholarship

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media student Katy Koesy, a rising senior from Raleigh, was selected as the recipient of the 4A's Carolinas Council’s third annual summer internship scholarship.
The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding school student interested in pursuing a career in advertising or public relations. Koesy will intern at 4A's agency Capstrat this summer.

Dr. John Pavlik is one of three candidates invited to campus by the search committee for the Dean of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
You are invited to attend an open forum with him on Thursday, May 5, from from 2 - 2:45 p.m. in Gerrard Hall.
The forum is designed to give the campus community an opportunity to hear from the candidate about his experience and his ideas for enhancing UNC-Chapel Hill, and an opportunity for you to provide feedback.

Commencement info for graduating students

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media spring commencement will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, in the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.
Comedian and radio personality Rick Dees will give the commencement address.
Doors to the Smith Center will open at 12:15 p.m. Students should line up at 12:15 p.m. at entrance C of the Smith Center.

2011 scholarship and award winners announced

The school presented top students and faculty with nearly 150 scholarships and awards totaling more than $214,000 at its annual honors convocation on April 25.
Outstanding graduating seniors in each specialization were recognized as were outstanding graduate students.

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students were part of 20 awards in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 2 Mark of Excellence Awards.

Park Fellow wins Page Society case study competition

Second-year master’s student and Roy H. Park Fellow at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Andrea Goetschius won the grand prize in the Arthur W. Page Society’s 2011 case study competition with a case study of the National Football League’s response to medical research on football-related concussions.

School places second in Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition

The school finished second in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, considered the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism.
Carly Brantmeyer, a May 2010 graduate of the school, won second place in the Picture Story/Series Competition, the third and final photojournalism competition. She will receive a $2,000 award for the win. Alexandra Brawley, a senior from Wrightsville Beach, N.C., placed eighth.

J-school junior named 2011 Burch Fellow

Bryce Butner, a junior journalism and English double major from Burnsville, N.C., will travel to Alaska to document the controversy surrounding a proposed open-pit copper mine as part of the Burch Fellows Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was one of six undergraduates selected.
