Arkasha Stevenson, a December 2010 photojournalism graduate, was named N.C. Press Photographers Association's 2011 College Photographer of the Year Sunday, March 20, in Asheville, N.C., at the NCPPA’s annual meeting.

Cloud recognized by American Copy Editors Society

Bill Cloud, who teaches editing at the school, is this year’s winner of the Glamann Award from the American Copy Editors Society.
Cloud is being honored for nearly 30 years in the classroom at the school and for his work with ACES since the organization was founded. In both roles, he has been a strong advocate for the need for editing.

N.C. Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations Halls of Fame inductions, April 10

Joseph Mitchell, Roy Park Jr., Gene Price, Chuck Stone, Ed Williams and Clarence Whitefield were inducted into the N.C. Halls of Fame in Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations during an April 10 ceremony in Chapel Hill. Bill Goodwyn and David Oakley received Next Generation Leadership Awards.

Students named finalists in SPJ Region 2 Mark of Excellence Awards

Students in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media have been named finalists in 15 categories of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 2 Mark of Excellence Awards.
The actual places awarded will be announced at the region’s Mark of Excellence Luncheon at the spring conference, April 8-9, in Norfolk, Va.
The finalists are listed, by category, below. UNC competes in the 4-year university category of the Mark of Excellence Awards.

Multimedia projects recognized in SND Best of Digital News Design

J-school students take first and second in Hearst multimedia competition

Carolina photojournalism seniors Margaret Cheatham Williams and Arkasha Stevenson placed first and second, respectively, in the multimedia competition’s features category of the 51st annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program, known as the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism.

NCSMA names Sircey N.C. high school journalist of the year

The N.C. Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA), based in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, has named Charles D. Owen High School journalist Janie Sircey the 2010 Rachel Rivers-Coffey North Carolina High School Journalist of the Year. Sircey serves as editor of her high school newspaper, The Hoofbeat, in Black Mountain, N.C.

Brown to be honored with Massey Distinguished Service Award

Jane D. Brown, James L. Knight Distinguished Professor in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, is one of six employees selected by Chancellor Holden Thorp to receive 2011 C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Awards, one of the most coveted distinctions the University gives faculty and staff.
