ibiblio, the public’s library and digital archive, has received $50,000 from the Beal Fund of the Triangle Community Foundation on behalf of Lulu.com. Lulu.com is an open publishing resource that helps authors distribute their work for profit and helps buyers find the content they need.

Getting Started in Business News conference for students

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the Carolina Business News Initiative are organizing a conference Oct. 21-23 in New York City for university students interested in a career in business journalism.
Getting Started in Business News – co-sponsored by the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, Bloomberg News, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Progress Energy – is open to undergraduate and master’s students.

Grant supports campus-wide First Amendment Day at Carolina

The McCormick Foundation is awarding the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media $5,000 to help the school raise awareness of the First Amendment and the fundamental freedoms it protects.
UNC is one of six universities selected to receive McCormick grants to conduct programs in the next academic year as part of the national “1 for All” campaign’s Liberty Tree Initiative that brings thought-provoking First Amendment programs and speakers to university campuses nationwide.

Carolina J-school launches online master’s degree

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is launching a new online master’s degree that focuses on interactive media, the Internet, digital economics and other issues reshaping journalism and mass communication in the 21st century. Prospective students may apply now through Jan. 1, 2011, for fall 2011 admission.

Free Press media reformer to speak about federal policy and journalism

Josh Silver, president and CEO of Free Press, will speak about the role of federal policy in shaping journalism on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. in Carroll Hall on the UNC campus.
The lecture – free and open to the public – is sponsored by the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy, a collaborative initiative of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the UNC School of Law.

Alumna among PRWeek's top '40 under 40'

PRWeek magazine named Katherine Ducker, class of 2001, as one of its “40 under 40” honorees. She is a director of Emanate agency, which is part of the Ketchum family.

School sets fundraising record in 2010 fiscal year

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media set a new record for private giving to the school this year, raising more than $7.7 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30.
The previous record of $6.2 million was set in 2004. Last year’s total was $4.7 million.

Carolina wins national championship in collegiate journalism

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media finished first overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the 50th anniversary of the Hearst Journalism Awards, often called the Pulitzers of college journalism.
