Nine 2020 College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) judges painstakingly looked at over 10,000 images and multimedia projects over the course of three days each to make their decisions in the 75th annual award season for the esteemed international photography and multimedia competition. When all was said and done, ten of the top spots went to UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students.

Long before November 3, UNC Hussman faculty and leaders including Dean Susan King, a veteran political journalist, knew that the aftermath of Election Day would arrive with a lot of questions and that the school’s excellent student journalists and communicators would be eager to tease out the answers. What do photographer Annie Leibovitz, filmmaker Ava DuVernay and UNC Hussman senior Valentina Arismendi ’21 have in common? Each talked in depth about creative storytelling on Tuesday, sharing her point of view with a global virtual audience at Adobe MAX 2020, The Creativity Conference. The irrepressibly curious Arismendi took a less than straight path to success at UNC. She detailed that winding journey in her Tuesday, October 20, Adobe MAX 2020 presentation “One Student’s Journey: How Digital Literacy Assignments Can Propel Success,” to 3,960 attendees from across the globe.

Three UNC Hussman students recognized for exceptional academic achievement

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media students Alice Bennett ’22, Kayley Carpenter ’21 and Maddie Ellis ’22 — three of the 19,117 undergraduate students currently enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill — will be inducted into the Carolina chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society in a virtual ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. The three join 181 additional Carolina students (and ten alumni) being recognized by the nation’s oldest honor society for exceptional academic achievement in the arts and sciences.
