A vibrant and collaborative interdisciplinary research culture at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media creates new knowledge, advances scholarship and helps reinvent media.

Ten graduate students, 11 faculty members and various alumni will represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Aug. 6-9, 2020, at the 103rd annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference, held in a virtual format. These scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers.

What is the workplace like for women at the intersection of politics and technology? A collaborative team of seven co-authors from UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media wielded rigorous social science standards in the quest to find out. Practitioners in the field and anyone interested in an inclusive workplace environment — or familiar with mansplaining, whisper networks, and layering, for that matter — will find their resulting book, “Recoding the Boys’ Club: The Experiences & Future of Women in Political Technology,” an eye-opening read. Alumna Jenni Ciesielski ’19, Haley Fernandez ’18, Kate Frauenfelder ’18, Brinley Lowe ’19 and Gabrielle Micchia ’19; Ph.D. candidate and Roy H. Park Fellow Kirsten Adams; and Associate Professor Daniel Kreiss authored the peer-reviewed book, a July Oxford University Press release. Royalties are being donated back to UNC Hussman.

UNC Hussman's Spring 2020 graduates dealt with an unprecedented, remote semester, and will be celebrating their graduation in person at the University at a future date.

UNC-Chapel Hill is requiring all students to sign an acknowledgement to abide by the public health guidelines and the University’s COVID-19 Community Standards that govern the entire Carolina community, including University faculty and staff.
