In Aprll 2020, sports writers Jonathan Eig and Jeff Pearlman started a student writing contest called The Big Scribble. Contestants would hear back from six established writers on their entries over five weeks. Top winners got the opportunity to consult with different well-known writers. Confined by the coronavirus to do their reporting and writing from childhood bedrooms and family basements, over four hundred quarantined students answered the call and took on the first Big Scribble assignment on April 20. Three students represented UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media in the group of 160 students from around the world who made it through the first of the competition’s five weekly rounds: Parth Upadhyaya ’20, Elizabeth Moore ’22 and Hannah Towey ’21. Towey made to the Top Ten.
