Eight news organizations in North Carolina have been selected to participate in a program launched by the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative in partnership with the UNC Center for Innovation & Sustainability in Local Media.

In a surprise ceremony before the 2017 Park Lecture on Thursday, April 6, Chancellor Carol Folt presented Roy H. Park Jr. with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine — among the most prestigious awards conferred by the governor of North Carolina. 

UNC School of Media and Journalism Professor Seth Noar and doctoral candidate Jennah Sontag’s report, “Assessing the Potential Effectiveness of Pictorial Messages to Deter Young Women from Indoor Tanning: An Experimental Study,” was published on Sunday, March 7, in the Journal of Health Communication. The report discusses the health risks associated with indoor tanning and suggests that there are more effective ways to communicate the health risks, than text-only messages.

Six students from the UNC School of Media and Journalism won Awards of Excellence at the annual Society of Professional Journalists Region 2 conference, while five more placed as finalists.

The Chancellor’s Awards honor outstanding students for their achievements in academics, student activities and leadership. Among the 78 awards, three were given to MJ-school seniors, Danny Nett, Miller Winston, and Catherine Blair. The ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 18, and was presided over by Chancellor Folt.

MJ-school Assistant Professor Dan Kim's research focuses on brand communication and consumer psychology, looking at what types of commercial messages resonate with social media users.

The MJ-school is proud to welcome Deen Freelon to its faculty starting July 1, 2017, as an associate professor. His primary areas of expertise are political expression through digital media and the use of computer programming and computational methods to extract, preprocess, analyze and visualize large digital datasets.

The School of Media and Journalism Foundation of North Carolina, Inc., will convene Thursday, April 6, under the new leadership of UNC alumnus J. Walker Smith '77, '81 (M.A.), '86 (Ph.D.) Smith became the MJ Foundation Board president effective Jan. 1, 2017. Walker has been described by Fortune magazine as “one of America’s leading analysts on consumer trends,” and he consults with clients globally about trends, futures, marketing and business strategy.
