WANTED: Director of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting

The Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, in conjunction with the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, seeks a Director.

The mission of the Society is to increase the ranks, retention and profile of reporters and editors of color in the field of investigative reporting. The Society seeks to raise the awareness of, and opportunities for, investigative reporting among journalists of color and to foster the desire for social justice journalism and accountability reporting about racial injustice. Although there are journalism membership organizations that provide training and skills building for investigative reporting and others that serve as advocates for diversity in newsrooms and media organizations, none of these groups adequately serve journalists of color who are interested in opportunities in investigative reporting. More information is at idabwellssociety.org.

The Director oversees staff and programs in the delivery of educational and public-service activities to audiences that address Society-related issues. The Director’s duties are integral to and uniquely supportive of the educational and public-service activities of the Society. The position incumbent evaluates the effectiveness of such activities and has significant and independent interaction with participants in the Society’s programs. The position works closely with the Society’s co-founders and an advisory board to incubate and implement initiatives.

The Director is responsible for the strategic success of the Society. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing and maintaining momentum around multiple concurrent educational and public-service projects;
  • Developing and implementing the communications dissemination strategy for the Society;
  • Overseeing Society operations, including financial and personnel resources;
  • Leading Society outreach and fundraising activities.
