Colorado’s 8th District – Nanette Díaz Barragán Campaign Highlights

Candidate Bio

Nanette Díaz Barragán is a woman of firsts: a first-generation American, a first-generation college graduate, and the first Latina representative for California’s 44th District. Barragán aligns closely with the causes that shaped her existence: environmental and health justice, immigration reform, strengthening the economy, and affordable and accessible education.

She comes from humble beginnings, being the youngest of 11 children raised by immigrant parents. Her father, a TV repairman, was 59 when she was born. Her mother was a factory worker who barely finished the third grade. Nanette grew up in Carson, where only 60% of students graduate high school and 10% graduate college. She beat the odds, obtaining her undergraduate degree from UCLA and her Juris Doctor from the USC Gould School of Law. When she was just 22, her father grew terminally ill, and she lost her role model. She mourned his passing by dedicating herself to healthcare reform. She has introduced bills that include adding dental work in Medicare, providing mental health care to separated children at the border, and lowering prescription drug costs.

Nanette began her career of public service in the Clinton White House, leading racial health disparities and discrimination outreach with the NAACP. She then served on California’s Hermosa Beach City council and was elected Mayor. During her time, she successfully stopped a powerful oil company from drilling 34 oil and water injection wells in Hermosa Beach and into Santa Monica Bay. She practiced law for ten years until she decided she wanted to represent her community on the national level. Recognizing that climate change and environmental injustice disproportionately affect the communities of her previous Congressional District, Nanette’s goal is to serve as a voice for this population and fight for clean air, clean water, and affordable healthcare for all.
