UNC J-school places 1st in Hearst broadcast competition; students win in TV broadcast news competition

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media won first place in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition, and two students placed in the television broadcast news competition of the 2014-15 Hearst Journalism Awards.

It is the 14th consecutive year the school has placed in the top 5 of the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition. The first-place finish comes as a result of accumulated student wins in radio and television broadcast competitions. UNC was followed by Arizona State University and the University of Southern California and will receive $10,000 for the win.

In the final Hearst broadcast competition of the year — the television broadcast news competition — Elizabeth Tew, a senior broadcast and electronic journalism major from Erwin, North Carolina, placed third for reports that aired on the school’s weekly newscast, “Carolina Week.”

Tew’s work was selected from 66 entries from students at 44 schools. With the win, she will receive a $1,500 award. She also will submit additional entries for a semi-final round of judging for a chance to compete in the Hearst individual national championships held in San Francisco in June.

Kristin Ruffin, a senior broadcast and electronic journalism major from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, placed eighth in the category and will receive a certificate of merit.

In 2013-14, the school finished fourth overall Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards. The school has finished in the top 5 overall of the Hearst competitions every year since 2004.
