Kate Sheppard is an adjunct instructor in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. She was previously a teaching associate professor. Kate is the managing editor at The Assembly, an upstart publication covering North Carolina. She was previously a senior enterprise editor at HuffPost and a staff reporter at Mother Jones. She has spent most of her career working in nonprofit and investigative news and has a particular interest in developing sustainable business models for and facilitating audience engagement with news. Her writing has been recognized with awards from the Society of Environmental Journalists, the Online News Association and the Deadline Club, and featured in the Best American Science and Nature Writing.
