Francesca Dillman Carpentier teaches mass communication theory and statistics, and she conducts research on mass media effects, audience responses to depictions of sex in media, and audience motivations governing media content choices.

Her published work can be found in academic journals that include Media Psychology, Health Communication, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Mass Communication and Society, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, as well as in health-related journals such as Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Journal of Primary Prevention, Journal of School Violence, and Journal of Adolescent Health.

Carpentier also teaches digital video production and serves as a consultant and producer of short video productions for local clients who need to reach and teach new audiences about their health-related messages. Recent projects have included a video to raise awareness of eating disorders on campus and videos to raise awareness of and solicit public action regarding organ disease and transplants, and a video to raise awareness and recruit new cancer survivors into an after-care fitness program.

Before academia, Carpentier worked as a scriptwriter, videographer and video editor.
