Our Dean

An internationally recognized leader, Raul Reis was named dean of UNC Hussman in July 2022 after 25 years of experience in academia and a track record for creating nationally ranked programs that prepare students for the fast-paced world of digital media. Reis worked for many years as a newspaper, television and magazine reporter and editor for Brazilian and U.S. news organizations.

At UNC, Reis is focused on positioning the school be a global leader in innovation, education and research amid profound change in journalism and media while remaining anchored to its democratic mission.  His emphasis is building a sustainable, future‑facing school that prepares graduates to shape public conversation across emerging technologies, platforms and careers. In line with school’s strategic plan, Reis is prioritizing the school’s work to strengthen the student journey, advance technology and innovation, and expand research and graduate education.

Volunteer Leaders

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media has three volunteer-driven boards — the Foundation Board, Board of Advisers and Alumni Board — that advise the school’s leadership. They share a common goal to raise funds and resources to support the school; raise awareness of the school’s mission, activities and achievements; and advocate for the school.
