Through a revamped curriculum, students learn the skills they need to succeed in the dynamic media environment, whether they pursue careers in journalism, advertising, public relations or other communications fields.
The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media offers undergraduate programs to prepare students for success in their careers and lives. Our curriculum helps students build the skill sets necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic media environment.
UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students who will have completed 45 or more cumulative credit hours (by the end of the semester in which they apply) and are in good academic standing are eligible to apply to the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s MEJO major.
Assured admits into the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media DO NOT need to reapply to the school.
Please note that it is strongly recommended that you have an established UNC GPA prior to applying.
If you are interested in applying for the media and journalism minor, please note that there is only one application cycle per year (August 15—October 1). Please visit the minor webpage for more information.
Applications can be requested on the first day of the application cycle and must be completed within the designated time frame. Late applications are not accepted.
You may not request the MEJO application before the application opens on November 1, 2026.
To ensure that your MEJO application is received by the deadline, please request your MEJO application no later than Jan. 13 at 5 p.m.
1. Log into ConnectCarolina and proceed to Self Service > Student Center.
2. From the “Other Academic” drop-down menu select “Apply for Change of Major/Minor.”
3. Select ‘”Hussman Advertising and Public Relations Track” or “Hussman Journalism Track” from the “Major/Minor” drop-down. Make sure to select the upcoming term for the current application cycle.
4. If you agree to the terms, click “I Agree” and “Submit Request.” (Please note, this action does not immediately change your current major status. You must be officially accepted.)
You must submit your change of major request at least one day before the application deadline to allow sufficient time to complete the application. Please note that manual major applications are not available.
5. Once your change of major/minor is submitted and processed, you should receive an email from “UNCSlateSupport@gradprof.unc.edu” within 24 hours with a link to activate your account and begin the application. Be sure to check junk/spam folders for an email from UNC SLATE in case it does not land in your inbox.
Decisions are typically made and sent to candidates within one month of the application closing. Late and paper applications are not accepted.
6. If admitted, you must officially accept your admissions decision in ConnectCarolina.
All students accepted to UNC Hussman must attend a mandatory new student orientation.
