UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s mission is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy.
The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,200 undergraduate and more than 100 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.
Through a revamped curriculum, students learn the skills to succeed in a dynamic media environment whether pursuing careers in journalism, advertising, public relations or other communications fields.
The school offers undergraduate areas of study in advertising/public relations and journalism with certificate programs in business communication, fashion communication and marketing, health communication and marketing, political communication and sports communication. A UNC Hussman Honors Program is also available to selected seniors students pursuing research or creative projects.

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media maintains its status as the top public program in media and journalism by adhering to rigorous standards ensuring that the curriculum, faculty qualifications and educational outcomes meet evolving industry and academic standards.
The Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) is the national organization that evaluates journalism and mass communication programs. All accredited programs are reviewed every six years.
UNC Hussman has been accredited since 1958.
The accreditation process includes an extensive self-study conducted the year prior to a site visit. The school’s most recent self-study was completed and submitted to ACEJMC in September 2020 and subsequently updated to reflect activity and changes during the COVID-related site visit pause and was resubmitted to ACEJMC in September 2021 in advance of the rescheduled site visit in October 2021. ACEJMC voted in April 2022 to provisionally reaccredit UNC Hussman and then revisited the school in January 2024 to evaluate progress toward the accrediting body’s Diversity and Inclusiveness standard.
In May 2024, the ACEJMC Accrediting Council voted unanimously to fully reaccredit the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
