As director of the school's high school media programs, Monica Hill works with the state's journalism teachers and students. The N.C. Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) promotes scholastic journalism programs and services. NCSMA offers fall regional workshops and a summer Institute. The association also coordinates statewide media contests for student publications and a fellowship program for N.C. high school journalism teachers.

Hill also operates the N.C. College Media Association, another outreach service of the school. NCCMA organizes an annual conference on a different college campus each year, as well as an annual statewide college media contest.

Hill serves as Crown Awards judge for Columbia University’s Columbia Scholastic Press Association and on the N.C. Open Government Coalition board. She is board consultant for Southern Interscholastic Press Association and ex-officio member of N.C. Press Foundation Board. She was formerly head of the Scholastic Journalism Division of Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and on board of directors for National Scholastic Press Association.
