UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students who will have completed 45 or more cumulative credit hours by the end of the semester in which they apply (for example, 30 credit hours completed and 15 credit hours in progress) and are in good academic standing are eligible to apply for the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s media and journalism major.
If you are admitted into the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, you must officially accept your offer in Connect Carolina in order for your academic program to reflect “Bachelor of Arts in Media and Journalism.”
NOTE: If you are entering UNC in the fall semester as a first-year or transfer student, you must wait until the first day of fall classes to request the major application via Connect Carolina. Applications may not be requested prior to the first day of classes in the fall semester.
NOTE: Transfer students and undergraduate Assured Enrollment students who were accepted directly to the school do not need to complete the application.

All applicants will be notified within one month of their application deadline.

NOTE: Transfer students and Undergraduate Assured Enrollment students who were accepted directly to the school do not need to complete the application. These students will receive information during the summer from the Hussman Undergraduate Hub regarding next steps to complete their enrollment.
To formally accept your offer of admission, return to the “Apply to Change My Major” page in ConnectCarolina and select “Accept Program.” You will need to schedule an appointment a Hussman Academic Adviser in order to declare a second major.
If you have been accepted into the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Gillings School of Public Health, or the School of Information and Library Science, please accept that offer in Connect Carolina FIRST. You will then need to email the UNC Hussman Undergraduate Hub at hussmanhub@unc.edu to ask that we manually add MEJO as your second major.
You are required to attend UNC Hussman orientation to be fully admitted to the school (dates/times will be listed in your acceptance letter). This mandatory orientation is held in the semester prior to enrollment and is required for all incoming MEJO majors prior to admittance to the school.
Students who are not accepted are welcome to reapply for a future enrollment period. When you reapply, it’s important to show significant change, such as more extracurricular leadership experience, more focused short-term and long-term career goals, stronger GPA and/or new relevant work experience. We strongly encourage you to describe these changes in the required essay section of your application.
No. Students may not double major or pursue a major and minor within the school.
Yes. All undergraduates must have a laptop that meets or exceeds Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) specifications. Students with federal aid may qualify for the CCI Laptop Grant. For certain courses, students can borrow photo-, video-, and audio-equipment through the school’s online system, Connect2. You can also check out equipment through the Media & Design Center at the Undergraduate Library.
Assured enrollment programs are available to incoming first-year students and guarantee a spot in an undergraduate major within a professional school.
At the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media, students admitted through the Assured Enrollment Program:
- Are guaranteed placement in the MEJO major.
- Receive priority registration for one MEJO course during their first semester at UNC.
- Do not need to submit a separate application to the major.
To maintain their assured enrollment status, students must complete the New Student Information Form (provided the summer before enrollment) no later than the end of their first semester. Students who do not submit the form on time will need to reapply for the major in a future semester.
Transfer students directly admitted to UNC Hussman do not need to complete the MEJO undergraduate application or reapply to the program. However, they must submit the New Student Information Form (provided the summer before enrollment) to finalize their admission.
Transfer students who were not directly admitted or who selected a different major must apply to UNC Hussman through the MEJO undergraduate application in a future semester.
NOTE: If you are entering UNC in the fall semester as a transfer student, you must wait until the first day of fall classes to request the major application via Connect Carolina. Applications may not be requested prior to the first day of classes in the fall semester.
Students majoring outside UNC Hussman may apply for the MEJO minor. Applications are accepted from November 15 to January 15. Learn more about the MEJO minor.
MEJO majors are not eligible for the MEJO minor. If you are currently a MEJO major and are considering switching to the minor, please schedule an appointment with a UNC Hussman academic adviser.
For questions or concerns regarding the MEJO major application process, please contact Senior Director of Undergraduate Program Stacy Outlaw at stacy.outlaw@unc.edu.
For academic advising needs, UNC students not yet admitted to UNC Hussman should meet with academic advising in the College of Arts and Sciences in Steele Building instead of UNC Hussman academic advising.
