Echoes of authoritarianism
What happens when laws meant to promote “transparency” become tools of political oppression? This roundtable brings together experts in journalism and political science to unpack the impact of Georgia’s Transparency of Foreign Influence law on independent media and civil society. Speakers will share first-hand insights into how the law is reshaping public life, constraining free expression, and testing the country’s democratic resilience — with lessons that extend well beyond Georgia’s borders.
Participants: Marisa Porto (Knight Chair in Local News and Sustainability, UNC School of Media and Journalism), Josiah Marineau (Associate Professor of Political Science, UNC-Pembroke), and Nutsiko Dzandzava (MA Student, UNC Curriculum in Global Studies).
