A Cinematographer’s Guide to the Galaxy: Making Documentaries in a Wild World
In a media universe flooded with content, much of it made by no one at all, the person behind the camera matters more than ever. UNC Hussman alumnus Guy Mossman, co-director of the Sundance documentary “Speak.” and cinematographer on “Feels Good Man,” “Buck” and “Bending the Arc,” returns to Carroll Hall to share what two decades behind the camera have taught him. From a Peace Corps village in Paraguay to the Sundance premiere of “Speak.,” he’ll offer a few lessons learned and observations for the next generation: how to tell stories that matter while navigating a film market in constant motion.

ABOUT GUY MOSSMAN
Guy Mossman ’04 (M.A.) is an American cinematographer whose work bridges intimate character study with bold, cinematic visuals. He made his first short film while serving in the Peace Corps in Paraguay in 2000 and went on to earn a Park Fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill, completing a master’s degree focused on journalism and documentary filmmaking.
Mossman is known for his dramatic, natural-light photography on award-winning documentaries including the Oscar-shortlisted Sundance Audience Award winner “Buck,” the Sundance Special Jury Prize-winning “Feels Good Man” and “Bending the Arc.”
In 2022, he made his directorial debut co-directing and lensing “The Human Trial,” an ambitious, years-long chronicle of a radical Type 1 diabetes clinical trial. Most recently, he co-directed, produced and photographed SPEAK., a feature documentary that premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, following teenage competitive orators at the National Speech & Debate Association’s championship as they discover the power of their voices through oratory and storytelling.

The visual communication alumni-in-residence series was created in honor of Mary Jane Price and Annie Cone Liptzin, who volunteered for nearly a decade to assist with the darkroom, equipment checkout and other needs of the UNC Hussman visual journalism program beginning in the 1980s.
