Behind the Lens: Visual Storytelling with Whitney Shefte

Whitney Shefte ’07 is a Peabody, Murrow and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and video journalist who worked at The Washington Post for over 17 years, showcasing versatility as a director, cinematographer, producer and editor across various projects.  

She is most passionate about character-driven, vérité-focused projects about a range of social issues – and excels at building intimacy with those characters in order to capture moments.  Her work spans the globe, including the war in Ukraine, climate change in Greenland, and the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, as well as various topics within the United States such as politics, healthcare and education.  

Shefte has received numerous accolades, including the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Courage in Journalism Award in 2023 and has served as president of the White House News Photographers Association.

Mary Jane Price and Annie Cone Liptzin

The visual communication alumni-in-residence series was created in honor of Mary Jane Price and Annie Cone Liptzin, alumnae who volunteered for nearly a decade to assist with the darkroom, equipment checkout and other needs of the UNC Hussman visual journalism program beginning in the 1980s.
