2026 NC Media & Journalism Hall of Fame honors 6 new inductees
The NC Media & Journalism Hall of Fame will induct five distinguished industry professionals and an innovative media company at its annual gala on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill.
The Hall of Fame honors exceptional leaders with ties to the state of North Carolina who demonstrate leadership in their spheres of influence; service to the professions and society; performance exemplifying the highest professional standards; and commitment to inspiring and advancing young people in media and journalism careers.
Jay Bilas, Seth Effron, Luchina Fisher, Tamara Norman, Charlie Tuggle and the Curtis Media Group will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for their outstanding and sustained contributions and leadership in their respective fields of media and journalism.

Jay Bilas is an award-winning college basketball analyst with ESPN. He is known for his extensive knowledge of men’s basketball and his insight about the sports industry. Bilas, who is featured on ESPN’s game and studio coverage, calls the top men’s college basketball games involving the nation’s marquee teams and conferences every week throughout the season. He joined ESPN’s Saturday Primetime telecasts in 2015, adding to his role on the popular Saturday morning broadcast College GameDay. He has been an analyst on the show since its debut in 2005, and he has been an integral part of ESPN’s coverage of the NBA Draft since 2003, providing in-depth player scouting coverage and analysis. He is a regular contributor on several ESPN shows and platforms, including SportsCenter, Get Up! and ESPN Radio, and is a Curt Gowdy Media Award recipient from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2024, ESPN announced that Bilas would join their NBA commentator team as a game analyst. Bilas is a two-time graduate of Duke University, where he earned bachelor’s and J.D. degrees and played on the men’s basketball team that finished as runner-up in the 1986 NCAA national championship.

Seth Effron is one of North Carolina’s digital journalism pioneers, creating The Insider in 1993 to provide in-depth and detailed information on North Carolina government and politics. What started as a daily faxed-to-subscriber service quickly moved into the then-emerging digital news space. In 1996, Effron became executive editor of Nando, the ground-breaking digital platform launched by The News & Observer of Raleigh. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1974, he started his professional journalism career at The Fayetteville (N.C.) Times and also worked at The Tallahassee Democrat and Wichita (Kan.) Eagle before returning to North Carolina as a state capitol correspondent for The Greensboro News & Record. Effron was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1992 and later worked for the Foundation as deputy curator and program director. He returned to North Carolina to work as executive editor for Curtis Media’s StateGovernmentRadio.com and then became a press aide to Govs. Mike Easley and Beverly Perdue before working in the N.C. Energy office during the Perdue and Gov. Pat McCrory administrations. In May of 2025 he retired after nine years writing editorials and editing columns as opinion editor for the Capitol Broadcasting Company.

Luchina Fisher is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, writer, speaker and educator with a mission to tell stories that move the world. She teaches filmmaking at the Yale University School of Art and Fairfield University Department of Film, Television and Media Arts, and won a 2024 Daytime Emmy for her Netflix documentary short The Dads. Fisher began her career as a journalist, writing for the Miami Herald and People Magazine, where she won a Peter Lisagor Award, and she went on to contribute to The New York Times, The Oprah Magazine and ABC News before moving into film full time. Today, her work exploring race, gender and identity has appeared on Netflix, Hulu, PBS, History, ESPN and BET — and has been screened in theaters, classrooms, festivals and companies around the world. Her honors include a GLAAD Special Recognition Award, Roger Ebert’s Golden Thumb Award and numerous festival prizes. Fisher earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1988 and studied film and television at the University of Bristol in England.

Tamara Norman is the U.S. chief executive officer for Ketchum, a leading global communications consultancy. Norman oversees the agency’s U.S. operations, including client service, talent management, new business development and financial stewardship. She guides the U.S. region with a passion for delivering excellence for clients and an outstanding team member experience. She has been recognized by PRWeek as a 40 Under 40 recipient and Woman of Distinction. With more than 30 years in the industry, Norman has focused on all aspects of corporate reputation management including executive communications, issues and crises; financial communications; employee engagement; purpose and media relations. She advises executives with numerous Ketchum clients on proactively managing their reputations internally and externally. Norman graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism and mass communication in 1994 and joined Ketchum in 1995, where she quickly became known for her client-first approach, strategic insights and success leading and motivating teams. Prior to being named U.S. CEO, she served as chief reputation and corporate affairs officer for the agency.

Charlie A. Tuggle — Dr. T to his students at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media — enjoyed a 16-year career in local television news and media relations before returning to academia to educate and train a new wave of broadcast journalists. As a teacher, he is known for developing storytellers. After launching the student newscast Carolina Week and running it for 15 years, he now oversees the twice-weekly sports highlights and analysis show “Sports Xtra” as well as the Media Hub capstone course in which students work in cross-platform teams to cover stories for distribution to media outlets throughout North Carolina. He led a group of 25 students as they covered the 2024 Paris Olympics, and another 25 to cover the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. He and his students have produced nine ESPN 30-for-30-style documentaries highlighting national championship teams at Carolina, including field hockey, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer. Tuggle is the 2002 recipient of a Superlative Edward Kidder Graham Award for Faculty, the David Brinkley Teaching Excellence Award and the Ed Bliss Award, a national honor for broadcast journalism educators who have made significant and lasting contributions to the field. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama.

The Curtis Media Group, founded in 1968 by Don Curtis, began its adventure in broadcasting in Cherryville, N.C., with WCSL-AM. Over the years, it has grown and developed into the largest single-shareholder radio broadcasting company in the country. Curtis Media is currently home to 61 AM and FM radio signals across the state. Headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., the company has firsthand experience with the exploding growth in the Triangle, and it owns and operates 30 leading radio brands in communities across North Carolina stretching from the mountains to the coast. In addition, the company has purchased an additional 31 FM translators which are designed to repeat and extend the coverage of owned and partner stations around the state. Curtis Media operates three networks providing diverse services to listeners across the state. They include the North Carolina New Network (NCNN), the Triangle Traffic Network (TTN) and The Southern Farm Network (SFN). A committee of professionals and UNC Hussman faculty review nominations to select each year’s nominees. Since its founding in 1981, the Hall of Fame has celebrated nearly 200 professionals in advertising, journalism, public relations and related fields. The gala induction ceremony benefits the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and its students in developing the future leaders and innovators of media and journalism.
