Frank A. Daniels Jr. Lecture with Melissa Harris-Perry

Please join us for the inaugural Frank A. Daniels Jr. Lecture with Melissa Harris-Perry to be held March 21 at 7 p.m. at Alumni Hall in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center.

We hope you will arrive early to join us for a pre-event reception beginning at 6 p.m. at Alumni Hall with Harris-Perry, students, faculty, staff and the campus and local communities.

Harris-Perry is the host and managing editor of “The Takeaway” daily public radio program — produced by WNYC and distributed by PRX — that airs Monday through Thursday on WUNC. She is also the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University. From 2012-16, she hosted the television show “Melissa Harris-Perry” on weekend mornings on MSNBC and was awarded the Hillman Prize for broadcast journalism.

Following Harris-Perry’s opening remarks, she will be joined on stage for discussion with three top UNC Hussman students — Taylin Cain ’23, Leslie Guzmán ’23 and Carolyn Schmitt ’23 (M.A.).

About Frank A. Daniels

The lecture honors the legacy of Frank A. Daniels Jr., the legendary former president and publisher of The News & Observer, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, who passed away June 30, 2022, leaving behind a storied legacy to North Carolina journalism and at UNC Hussman.

Under the direction of Daniels, The News & Observer was recognized widely as one of the best state capital newspapers in America and a leading progressive voice in the South. Daniels led The News & Observer through early innovations in digital publishing, launching The News & Observer Times in 1994 as the first online newspaper the same year he started Nando.net, the first commercial internet service provider. The News & Observer won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1996.

Daniels was a stalwart supporter of education in North Carolina. As a member of the Raleigh Junior Chamber of Commerce, he was part of the group that engineered the merger of the Raleigh and Wake County Public School systems that enabled the systems to integrate successfully and become one of the leading large school systems in the country. Daniels served on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors and as a trustee at the Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina, Appalachian State University, Saint Mary’s College and Peace College.

He is a 1996 inductee to the NC Media & Journalism Hall of Fame. In 2020, the Frank A. Daniels Jr. Executive-in-Residence Program was established at UNC Hussman in his honor.
