The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media raised $131,269 for this year’s Tar Heel Tuesday, the UNC version of #GivingTuesday, on Nov. 29, 2016.
2015 challenge grant donors Susan Credle and Frank Andrews returned with dual $10K challenge grants: If the school could raise $20,000 in 24 hours, Credle and Andrews would match it, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000 each. A third challenge grant donor — alumnus Rusty Carter ’71 — also donated $10K specifically to challenge those alumni who had never given to the school or who hadn’t given in three or more years.
Seniors were also encouraged to give their senior legacy campaign gift of $20.17 on #GivingTuesday. For UNC Hussman contributions, the Class of 2017 led in number of donors with 21 total donors, followed by 7 in the Class of 2018. The Class of 1989 contributed the highest dollar amount to UNC Hussman at $20,250.
Now in its fifth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the Unites States) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
UNC’s Office of University Development set a goal of $300,000 in 2016, after raising $235,902.64 in 2015. According to a release on Wednesday, Nov. 30, UNC’s online gifts totaled $503,903.02.
