UNC Hussman senior and alumnus named Student Photographer of the Year and Cumulative Photographer of the Year at NCPPA convention

UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media senior Dillon Deaton was named Student Photographer of the Year and Andrew Dye, a 2012 graduate, was named the Cumulative Photographer of the Year at the North Carolina Press Photographers Association convention April 8-9. The annual competition was held at UNC Hussman this year.

The N.C. Press Photographers Association’s Cumulative Photographer of the Year award recognizes the photographer who has accumulated the most points in monthly contests throughout the previous calendar year. Dye also won both third place and an honorable mention in the Sports Feature category. In addition to the Student Photographer of the Year honor, Deaton won first place in the General News category, second place and an honorable mention in the Feature category, second place and an honorable mention in the Portrait category, second place in the Cell Phone Photo category, first place in the News Picture Story category and second place in Multimedia (short term) category.

Dye has worked as a photographer for the Winston-Salem Journal since 2012. Dye worked alongside two other students and won third place in the team innovation category at the 2012 AEJMC Best of the Web competition. The award-winning project was the Carrier Classic interactive scoreboard, a slideshow presentation of the UNC vs. Michigan State basketball game played on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in 2011.

Since starting at UNC in 2014, Deaton has interned as a photographer with both The Charlotte Observer and The Fayetteville Observer. He is also on UNC Hussman’s Media Hub senior capstone experience team, is a Stembler Scholar and helped produce Rooted in the Rapids with the Carolina Photo Journalism Workshop in 2015.
