Michigan’s 13th District – Mary Sheffield Campaign Highlights
Candidate Bio
I grew up here, in Detroit, walking to my public school and attending UAW meetings with my grandad. Raising a child takes a village, and the people of District 13 were my village. While my mom rotated between teaching and nursing shifts, my neighbors took care of me. But the government wasn’t taking care of us. I would sit and listen at neighborhood cookouts as my neighbors talked about housing and insurance and gun violence and gentrification. Big corporations were moving in and driving out the community I was raised by.
I am running for the people of District 13. I am tired of seeing my people steamrolled and bullied by big corporations with bigger pockets. When those companies asked for my support after I became city council President, I told them what I tell you now: my loyalty belongs to you, the people of this district. My loyalty belongs to the same unseen and unheard my grandfather and father saw and heard and fought for.
When the UAW began striking, I was reminded of visiting those meetings with my grandfather and the same complaints were still being raised: we aren’t being seen and we aren’t being heard. I spoke with those on the picket line and saw that change needed to be enacted on a federal level. So- I formed my campaign.
I am running for higher office to give a megaphone to those workers and to our people. We need a strong representative that won’t back down from General Motors or the housing epidemic or private health insurers or gun manufacturers. We need a representative who will speak in favor of a living wage and common-sense gun control. That representative is me.
I have pledged my life to service and I am promising you all I will fight for what’s right, for the people of District 13. Just like Joe Louis fought for Black America, just like my grandfather fought for the union workers, and just like my father fought for the Detroit community, I will stand to serve MY people.
The People are my Purpose.
You are my Purpose.
