Six UNC Hussman professors were among 63 faculty and staff members recognized at the Faculty Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the Morehead-Cain Foundation on February 6.

Graduating seniors in the Morehead-Cain Class of 2026 nominated faculty and staff members who made a significant impact on their academic experience, professional development and personal growth at Carolina. The fourth annual luncheon provided an opportunity for scholars to formally thank the educators, advisors and mentors who supported them throughout their undergraduate years.

Many tributes emphasized how faculty influence the way they approach decisions beyond the classroom. Lauryn Taylor ’26 reflected on the impact of Livis Freeman, distinguished associate professor of sports communication and assistant dean for course management and staffing at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

“He taught me to chase passion over security,” Taylor said. “He made me feel okay wanting something different from my peers or from the version of myself I once imagined.”

Other tributes spoke about the role faculty played in helping scholars develop perspective and confidence. Finn Sansom recognized Michael Acosta, teaching associate professor in the UNC Department of Communication, for challenging how he defines success.

“Professor Acosta helped me see that I’d been measuring my life against other people’s success rather than asking what matters to me. He is a teacher of life,” Sansom said.

Scholars also highlighted mentors who provided consistent encouragement and care. Flavia Nunez Ludeiro honored Shimul Melwani, professor of organizational behavior at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, for the support she offered throughout her time on campus.

“Walking inside Dr. Melwani’s office is like stepping into comfort. My college experience would not be the same without her,” Ludeiro said.

Hear from the scholars

“Tim Crothers’ ‘MEJO 356: Feature Writing’ inspired me to take a path this past year that I could only have dreamed of a year prior. I got to grow closer to my grandma because of his class. I’m trying to write a book right now because of the inspiration I took from his class. I’m very grateful to have had a class with Crothers and to have learned from him.”

“Associate Professor Cuadros truly cares about the success and development of each of his students. ‘MEJO 553: Advanced Reporting’ was not just a course to me; it pushed me to become a stronger critical thinker and a sharper journalist, invigorated by the power of amplifying the voices of our community. Beyond the classroom, he has pushed me to be better, and I am forever grateful for the motivation and wisdom he provides!”

“Pat Davison is the director of the documentary program and has been instrumental to my growth at UNC. He has been a constant support from the time I was a freshman to now as I approach graduation.”

“My creative mind wandered in college, and it wasn’t until Tyson’s ‘MEJO 371: Advertising Creative’ class that it found a home. Her belief in my ideas, and in so many others’, sparked the confidence to pursue the creative business. Because JT’s classroom wasn’t just where we learned — it was where we felt like we could belong.”

“Livis Freeman was the first professor who taught me to chase passion over security, even when that passion felt new or fleeting. Redefining what success meant for me was the hardest part of undergrad, and he made me feel okay wanting something different from my peers or from the version of myself I once imagined. He made me and so many others feel confident in the people we were working to become.”

“In a world constantly reshaped by technology, Associate Professor King has taught me to stay endlessly curious and to embrace change rather than fear it. He inspires me to combine storytelling and technology in ways that can truly make a positive impact.”
