Cuba — MEJO 584: Documentary Multimedia Storytelling
March 9-18
Professor Pat Davison and adjunct instructor Tamara Rice will take 23 photo, video, reporting and advertising students to Cuba over spring break to create a multimedia documentary website that will explore how the opening up of the country is changing the lives of young Cubans. In 2016, the class traveled to Panama and produced Undercurrent 360, which is now a finalist for the 20th annual SXSW Interactive Innovation Award in the Student Innovation category. The category recognizes exceptional interactive technology projects or startups.
London — MEJO 447: International Media Markets
March 10-18
Associate Professor Rhonda Gibson will lead the MEJO 447: International Media Markets class to London over spring break. Gibson and her class will visit companies such as Google, Bloomberg, Facebook, BBC News, APCO Worldwide and The New York Times to learn about how the U.K. media market differs from the U.S. market and how these companies are preparing for Brexit. This will be the second year Gibson has taught this course.
London, Paris — Workroom FashionMash program
March 10-15 (London) and March 15-18 (Paris)
Five students from the Workroom FashionMash program will travel to London and Paris to study fashion media, branding, design and production. Two students are in the current Workroom FashionMash product design class, and three are part of Coulture Magazine, the campus fashion magazine funded through the program. The trip will feature networking meetings with fashion entrepreneurs, an inside look at fashion design schools and conversations with fashion and lifestyle media groups. Company contacts include Refinery 29 London and Cartier Paris. Workroom FashionMash director and professor of the practice Dana McMahan will be accompanying the group. Sarah Angold, a bespoke jewelry and tech designer from London will be opening her studio for the students when they arrive. She will then travel to UNC on Monday, April 3, to conduct a maker workshop, visit classes and participate in a year-end panel on the industry. Her partnership is the first in establishing an exchange program with European designers.
San Francisco — Student Networking Trip
March 12-16
UNC Hussman students will attend a spring break networking trip in San Francisco from March 12-16. During the 2016 networking trip, students met with professionals from Google, Facebook, FleishmanHillard, Vessel and Airbnb. Led by Director of Career Services Jay Eubank, students on this year’s trip will spend one day in San Francisco and one day in Silicon Valley. The school will also host an MJ Day — San Francisco alumni reception on Monday, March 13, at 6 p.m.
Raleigh — CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship Program
March 15-19
In partnership with Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) in Raleigh, UNC Hussman will host an intensive hands-on workshop led by WRAL-TV professionals and UNC media and journalism faculty. The CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship Program, which funds 12 top college seniors or graduate students from across the country, is designed to prepare participants for future broadcast media careers and help increase diversity in the industry.
