UNC Hussman and Bloomberg expand journalism program to Brazil — its first in Latin America
The inaugural Bloomberg Journalism Programs – Brazil was held August 1-3 in São Paulo, welcoming undergraduate journalism students from across Brazil. This program is an expansion of Bloomberg’s global journalism education initiative, in partnership with the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the Department of Journalism at Faculdade Cásper Líbero in São Paulo.
“We’re excited to see the Bloomberg Journalism Programs expand to Latin America with this inaugural offering in Brazil. This collaboration between Bloomberg, UNC Hussman and Faculdade Cásper Líbero marks a significant step forward for global business journalism education,” said Raul Reis, dean of UNC Hussman. “The students’ energy, curiosity and commitment to meaningful storytelling remind us why programs like this are so valuable in launching promising careers. We’re grateful to Bloomberg and our academic partners for supporting the next generation of leading business journalists.”

In Brazil, 13 students were selected from more than 400 applications. The participants are enrolled at 11 different universities across Brazil including: Casper Líbero, Centro Universitário Celso Lisboa, ESPM Rio, FAM, Universidade Estadual do Piauí, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, and Universidade Federal de Roraima.
The Bloomberg Journalism Programs offer students hands-on experience in business journalism, equipping them with skills to effectively report on the economy, companies, financial and commodity markets, and other topics affecting the global economy. Through direct engagement with Bloomberg News professionals and influential industry leaders, participants gain practical insights and learn to navigate The Bloomberg Terminal. They also receive training based on The Bloomberg Way — Bloomberg News’ guide to reporting, editing and applied business and economic knowledge. The Brazil program marks another milestone in Bloomberg’s mission to enhance business journalism education and career opportunities worldwide.
“We are excited about testing the Bloomberg Journalism Programs in Latin America,” said Matt Winkler, editor-in-chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, and founder of the program. “Brazil is a highly diverse society and its economy and financial markets are growing. We hope to inspire a new generation of students to become inquisitive business journalists.”

Bloomberg Journalism Programs, established in collaboration with UNC Hussman since 2017, have expanded from UNC-Chapel Hill and UC Berkeley to City, University of London. There are more than 260 graduates of the program who have pursued careers at various organizations, including Bloomberg News.

Bloomberg’s Journalism Programs are part of Bloomberg’s larger Global Business and Financial Journalism Education Initiative, which aims to advance business journalism and provide career opportunities for journalists from a wide range of backgrounds around the world. With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and other international funders, Bloomberg Global Business and Financial Journalism Education Initiative furthers their corporate philanthropic mission to address inequities, support diverse voices and expand access to education using the expertise of employees and resources of the business to create lasting impact.
