UNC Hussman at AEJMC 2022

Fourteen graduating and returning graduate students, six faculty members and various alumni are scheduled to represent the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media Aug. 3-6, 2022, at the 105th Annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference, held in Detroit, Michigan. UNC Hussman Dean Raul Reis will be installed as the 2022-2023 Association for Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication president on Thursday, Aug. 4, and Associate Professor Deb Aikat will be installed as the 2022-2023 AEJMC president on Friday, Aug. 5, replacing Susan Keith ’03 (Ph.D.) of Rutgers.

Also on Friday, Aug. 5, Ph.D. alumni, faculty, and graduate students will gather at Grand Trunk Pub for breakfast.

UNC Hussman scholars will participate in panel sessions and present authored or co-authored papers throughout the conference. Among the accepted papers are four recognized as top papers in their divisions, including two co-authored by Associate Professor Amanda Reid (pictured).

Amanda Reid and Ph.D. student Evan Ringel ’21 (M.A.) won a top faculty paper award for “Regulating facial recognition technology and the First Amendment.”
Amanda Reid and Isabela Palmieri ’22 (M.A.) won a second-place faculty paper award for “Copyright’s threat to shareability: A contractual solution via platforms’ user agreement to favor free embedding.”
• M.A. student Monica Crawford won a top student paper award for “Pronouns, framing, and (in)visibility: Considering the gender visibility frame.”
