Well-wishes from our alumni to UNC Hussman 2020 graduates
This week, Hussman School of Journalism and Media graduates will represent a proud part of the 2020 graduating class of 4,053 undergraduates and 2,350 graduate students at Carolina. Watch as some alumni and campus community members welcome graduates to the next chapter of their Tar Heel experience.
Among the well-wishers are four UNC Hussman graduates, including WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar ’93. “I am so happy for this amazing group of Tar Heels to go out and make your mark on this world,” said Kilar, who opened the video in his UNC cap. “Pandemic or no pandemic, it is a great day to be a Tar Heel. Go get ‘em.”
CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin ’91 sent some practical advice to Carolina graduates: “Know your worth, put down your phones, and look people in the eye. And never forget where you came from. Go Heels!”
Nikole Hannah-Jones ’03 (M.A.), whose 2020 Pultizer Prize in journalism in recognition of her 1619 Project for The New York Times Magazine was announced today, shared a message of hope with this year’s graduates. “I know things probably seem really bleak right now,” said Hannah-Jones, “but you have all accomplished something really amazing. And things will get better.”
Influencer Mariah Barksdale ’16 at The Wing noted the unusual times. “I know that it might not look exactly the way you planned it and my heart really goes out to those who weren’t able to perform in their spring senior shows or celebrate LDOC on the quad, but I just want to say we are Tar Heels, we are strong and we will get through this.”
Other Carolina luminaries congratulating this year’s graduates included head football coach Mack Brown, who encouraged a look ahead. “Congratulations on graduating from THE University of North Carolina! Now, reset your goals and get ready to attack that next phase of your life. Good luck.”
