UNC Hussman at the 2023 National Communication Association Convention

Four UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media graduate students and two faculty members will present their research Nov. 16-19 at the National Communication Association 109th Annual Convention in National Harbor, Maryland.

Doctoral students Emily Galper and Destiny Peterson will each present two papers as first or solo authors, while Emily will present a third as co-author. Faculty members Xinyan (Eva) Zhao and Seth Noar each co-authored three papers being presented, and Dr. Zhao will receive a top-paper award. Ph.D. student Heesoo Jang will present a solo-authored paper, and master’s student Coco Li will discuss her research in progress. Associate Professor Spencer Barnes will participate as a session respondent.

• Destiny Peterson was selected for the Top Student Papers in Feminist and Gender Studies Division session for her paper “Explication of ‘Sexual Objectification’ and a Call for Reconceptualization: Putting Sex in Sexual Objectification Studies, A starting Solution for Mainstream Video Media.”
• Xinyan (Eva) Zhao and colleague Rong Ma earned a top-paper award for the Health Communication Division for their paper “How Gay and Bisexual Men Respond to Mpox Messages through Risk- Versus Identity-Based Mechanisms: An Integrated Model.”
