Catch an upcoming master’s info session on Zoom
The fall 2027 admission application for UNC Hussman’s program on campus in Chapel Hill is open now, and program administrators will host an online info session for each area in the coming weeks.
The school offers one-year areas of study in journalism and in strategic communication for aspiring professionals. Other students pursue a two-year degree in communication theory and research, which can be earned alongside a law degree in our J.D./M.A. dual degree with the UNC School of Law.
The program director and a staff member will lead a session for each area of study, following this scedule:
- Thursday, Oct. 1: M.A. Theory and Research
- Tuesday, Oct. 6: M.A. Journalism
- Thursday, Oct. 8: M.A. Strategic Communication
- TBD: J.D./M.A. dual degree
The Oct. 1, 6 and 8 sessions will all take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom. Details and registration links are below. The school will host two other online info sessions soon. Professionals with at least three years of communication experience are eligible for the online master’s and certificate programs, which will be highlighted in a Sept. 29 webinar and info session. Aspiring scholars who already hold master’s degrees may apply to the doctoral program; learn more in a Ph.D. info session Sept. 24.
M.A. Theory and Research
The two-year Theory and Research program of study is designed for students interested in pursuing doctoral degrees and careers in academia, or for students interested in non-academic research positions. The curriculum is aligned with our acclaimed Ph.D. program. Students take core classes alongside doctoral students and often later apply to that program.

In one year, our Journalism students develop reporting and writing skills, learn to tell stories across platforms, and practice public-service journalism that informs communities and strengthens civic life. They benefit from UNC-Chapel Hill’s long-standing expertise and reputation in journalism education, while also receiving hands-on instruction in the ethical use of AI tools to enhance their reporting.

Students graduate from our revamped, one-year Strategic Communication area of study prepared for jobs in agencies, corporations, nonprofit organizations and government. We help set them up to land those jobs with a focus on crafting a personal brand and connecting with industry professionals.
Info session Oct. 8J.D./M.A. with the UNC School of Law
Students in the J.D./M.A. dual degree program concurrently complete our Theory and Research curriculum and the UNC School of Law’s J.D. program. They earn both degrees in as little as four years and build research expertise in law and policy areas like privacy, intellectual property and the First Amendment.
