Attend an M.A. info session this month on Zoom
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media’s master’s program on campus at UNC-Chapel Hill offers specialized pathways to prepare students for the careers they’re seeking as communications professionals and scholars. We offer one-year areas of study in journalism and in strategic communication for aspiring professionals. Other students pursue a two-year degree in communication theory and research.
The application for 2025 admission is open now, and there are three remaining info sessions this month to help you learn about our areas of study and the corresponding admissions processes. Details:
Earn a Journalism degree in one year
Our Journalism curriculum launched in 2023-24, allowing aspiring and early-career journalists to complete an intensive dive into learning the specialized skills of their craft. Each student pursues one of three specializations: interactive design journalism, public life reporting or video journalism.

Prepare for a Ph.D. program with Theory AND Research
The two-year Theory and Research program of study is designed for students interested in pursuing doctoral degrees and careers in academia, or for students interested in non-academic research positions. The curriculum is aligned with our acclaimed Ph.D. program. Students take core classes alongside doctoral students, and often later apply to that program. We also offer a J.D./M.A. dual degree program, allowing students to complete a Theory and Research master’s and concurrently earn a J.D. from the UNC School of Law, all in four years.
