Viscom speaker series: Video-related journalism fields
UNC Viscom proudly presents Emma Tobin ’19, ’22 (M.A.) as part of the 2026 speaker series!
Tobin is a Peabody Award-winning senior manager and visual storyteller based in Brooklyn, New York. She has an FAA Part 107 commercial drone license and a Wilderness First Responder certification and has created work in 28 countries. She is travel-ready.
With deep experience in visual journalism through working at CNN and the Associated Press, Tobin leads all projects with a story-first mentality. She leverages this in her current work with both brands and news organizations, telling impactful human-centered stories. Tobin manages and participates in the complete production process, with comprehensive technical skills across directing, filming, editing and producing. She is a high achiever, strategic communicator, idea generator and collaborator that always leads with empathy.
Tobin’s work has also received awards from the Overseas Press Club Foundation, James Beard Foundation, National Press Photographers Foundation, NLGJA and Facebook. She has been published by CNN, New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Associated Press, PBS, LA Times, CBS, NPR, ABC, USA Today, Miami Herald, Seattle Times, Star Tribune and The Times of India, among others.
