AEJMC Convention 2008

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media played a significant role in the 2008 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) convention with more than 30 papers accepted from the school’s students and faculty.

AEJMC held its annual convention in Chicago Aug. 6-9. This year’s theme was transformation in the journalism and communication disciplines and industries.

Doctoral student Sherine El-Toukhy’s paper in the AEJMC Law and Policy Division earned the top student award. Nine of the 32 papers accepted in the Law and Policy Division have UNC affiliations. Peter Bobkowski's paper "Cultivating Critical Thinking in a Media Ethics Classroom" won the Carol Burnett Award for top student paper in the Media Ethics Division.

At least three of the school’s students -- Mackenzie Cato, Justin Martin and Hai Tran -- had three or more papers accepted for the conference.

Several former doctoral students in the school presented papers. Former doctoral student Edward Alwood's latest book, "Dark Days in the Newsroom: McCarthyism Aimed at the Press," won the 2008 James Tankard Book Award.
